Located 24 kilometres outside Kuching and set amidst a lush tropical rainforest, the Semenggoh Rehabilitation Centre was set up to be a sanctuary to some of Sarawak’s protected wildlife, mainly the Orang Utans. The entire facility occupies an area of 740 acres — the only remaining green belt near the city which acts as a sanctuary for 0rang utans. This rehabilitation centre serves as a temporary home for young orphaned primates and displaced orang utans that are rescued from captivity. Your tour will begin with a scenic drive to the Semenggoh Orangutan Centre from Kuching. Upon arrival, you will have half-kilometre trek to the feeding platform. Feeding times are scheduled every day and during these times, you will get a chance to witness orang utans and their cute antics! The highlight of the tour is to observe the young orang utans come down from the trees to be fed. Although physical contact is not allowed, you can take as many photos as you like from a short distance. After the feeding time, you can proceed to have a short visit to the Information Centre where photos and exhibits are on display. Here, you can learn more about these endangered animals. The rehabilitated animals are to be released back into the wild once they are independent and able to find food for themselves. The main goal of the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is: “To rehabilitate confiscated wildlife that have been incapacitated or handicapped due to prolonged captivity by humans, with the objective of releasing them to the forests eventually “.
